Tribute to the Glorious Sandhill Cranes
This video is a slideshow of images and sounds recorded entirely on
public access land in and near the Cosumnes River Preserve in California's
Central Valley and Delta (including agricultural land surrounding Staten
Island, Twin Cities and Woodbridge Roads).
All images and field audio were recorded between November, 2007 and
March, 2008 as the Sandhill Cranes returned to their ancient winter
home in the Sacramento Valley. This migration has been going on for at
least 10,000 years. But there are many problems ahead. 95% of the
native wetlands of the valley have been drained, "developed" or planted
with crops that don't support these magnificent creatures. The future is
dire for these ancient creatures. Many thanks to the humans whose efforts
have preserved the remaining habitable areas and to the far sighted
leaders who will assure a future home as humans and cranes coexist in
harmony.
We share these images in an effort to raise consciousness and appreciation
of these incredible ancient creatures living amongst us in our modern
world.
As we develop more of the thousands of images that we have captured
we will include them in future videos and ultimately in educational
Hybrid DVDs currently under production. It is a work in progress.
Individual images are best viewed in the image gallery where they can be
enlarged. The DVD version of the video is stunning and plays very
well on high resolution plasma. It makes an excellent screen saver for
your television while filling your environment with the natural sounds of
the wetlands.
Many thanks to the folks at Save Our Sandhill Cranes for their inspiration
and dedication. Please visit them at www.SOSCranes.org.
You can view web enabled versions of the show here. The video files are
posted in both low and high resolution. Please allow the file to
completely load before pressing the play button again. Let the show
run through completely on the first viewing. After the first complete
viewing you will be able to use the player controls.
Scroll down and choose your preferred resolution. Click play control and
go get a cup of coffee while it loads. Turn your volume up and you will
hear the show when it begins. Let the show play through completely
before restarting from the beginning. After it has played through once
press play again to view. If you press play to view the show before it has
completely loaded it will begin to play but stop during playback. If the
show stops during the first playback have another cup and allow it to
finish the download. Then press play again. After the show plays through
completely the first time it will play normally and all of the player
controls will be active.
The high resolution version is 4x sharper than the low resolution version
(with much smoother transitions) but does not compare to the DVD on a
plasma screen with high quality audio equipment (or head phones).
