There is a lovely dawn sky that forms only when conditions are just right. Photographers know it as the pink light dawn. Sometimes it lasts only one or two minutes. On October 20, 2009 the sky blazed pink over the Cosumnes River Preserve wetlands for nine minutes. The Sandhill Cranes awakened to a glorious day and, as cranes will do, they certainly made the most of it. We were there capturing it all. This film has no human voices but great crane songs and tenderly soft purrs can be heard below as legions of ducks and geese sing overhead. Red-winged Blackbirds, Black-necked Stilts, Western Meadowlarks, Black-crowned Sparrows and many others joined the Pink Light Dawn chorus in beautiful field recorded stereo.
The soundtrack was recorded with a Telinga Stereo DAT Parabolic Microphone and Sony PCM D-50 digital audio recorder. Compiled from 48 audio files obtained during 8 dawn recording sessions on Desmond Road in the Cosumnes River Preserve from 11/26/09 to 1/2/10. Our intent is to include the freeway sounds (I-5 in the background) without allowing the noise to overshadow the natural symphony. The video is set to loop (run continuously) to allow the soundtrack to be used for background sounds in your work area. Just allow the video to load then minimize the window and get back to work while your head is in the wetlands. Use of headphones or ear buds will keep those pesky co-workers at bay while you immerse your consciousness in the dawn symphony.
Ultimately, Pink Light Dawn will be another piece of a multi-media puzzle that is under development. It will include field stereo audio from the wetlands, detailed Crane visiting tips / maps and other goodies.
