A Red Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) proclaimes his territory
in this short video. Audio was recorded with a stereo parabolic mic.
To really appreciate the audio listen with phones - watch that
volume!

Run time:  2:43, File size: 10.5 mb
Stereo sound is captured with this
domestically assembled (home made)
parabolic microphone. A Raynox 2.2x
teleconverter is added to the lens to
create a 35mm equillivant of about
1200mm.
The Rhode Video mic with Dead Cat
windscreen is a more portable field
recording solution but records only
one channel (mono). This is the rig
used to vid the Acorn Woodpeckers.
The black arrow near top center
marks their home. Mouse over the
image for a closeup.
The Acorn Woodpecker Family (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a
noisy, rambunctious bunch. They've been known to party late
into the night keeping the forest jumping. We spent a few days
with them as their newest chicks were getting ready to hit the
woods. Unedited audio includes the sounds of White-tailed Kites,
Wild Turkeys, House Finches and the resident Red Shouldered
Hawk. Filmed in an urban "nature study area", sounds of humans
rafting the American River, planes and helicopters and the
ubiquitous code-3 vehicle can also be heard.

Run time 9:28, File size: 36.5 mb (let it load)
Comments?
Video download to your machine begins when you press the
"play" button. Vid will start after a good percentage of the file
has downloaded. Be patient. It really does work. A 10 MB file
should begin to play in less than 2 minutes via DSL. A 20 MB file
showtime.
